THE MILLION DOLLAR SMASH is a series of 7 uniquely reimagined piñatas, hand sculpted and painted by Gordon Hull. Each one contains a single scratch-off lottery card with a potential prize of up to One Million Dollars.
Are these really piñatas? They seem like hanging sculptures or ornaments...
In truth, they are both. As an artist, I am particularly drawn to instances of joy and wonder and surprise in addition to the immediate beauty of an object or image. I enjoy the simplicity of things, but the complexity of meaning that is hidden in that simplicity. With piñatas, I love the idea of a celebratory object that is destroyed to reveal surprises inside. I love the mystery of its contents, the potential of it- similar to a wrapped gift... and with these objects I have created, inside is the potential of wealth, but at the cost of destruction of a thing of beauty.
As a purely visual exercise, I wanted to create a series of sculptures that allowed me to play with new dimensions in my work, allow me to continue to experiment with patterns and prints, and also carve out an interesting space in a home by engaging the emptiness between ceiling and floor... with the magic of a floating object (tho 2 of the 7 are tabletop, not hanging). This- combined with the surprise of the piñata contents, really felt like it aligned with my personal artististic philosophy of lo-fi magic.
